Student
Achievement
As of now, West is undergoing an
appeal to the state of Michigan regarding the status of our (Adequate
Yearly Progress) AYP rating. The state has determined that West did not
make AYP this year due to a small segment of our population who did not
score high enough on the MEAP test. This has occurred often in our
district but this is the first time it has happened to West. We fully
expect to prevail upon our appeal and have our successful run of
attaining AYP remain intact.
West has planned a wonderful evening for
Tuesday, May 20th as our 8th graders who earned academic
honors and other awards will be treated to a night of recognition at the
Knights of Columbus Hall in Taylor. The WestWinds under the direction of
Mrs. Scott will play prior to the awards and then students will be
recognized for a host of awards. National Junior Honor Society advisors,
Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Yockey, organized their annual induction ceremony and
the Kennedy ROTC Honor Guard opened our evening with their precision
drill on honoring our flag and country. It will be a special night
indeed!

The last day of school is Thursday, June 12, 2008.
There is a half-day on Wednesday the 11th and Thursday the
12th for final exams. Exams will be given in 1st,
2nd and 3rd hour on Wednesday and 4th,
5th and 6th hour on Thursday. All students must
take exams unless excused by a doctor or have a family emergency. If
you will be leaving town, they need to make arrangements to take them
early. Any student not excused will receive an “E”. Students that are
suspended will be able to take their exam after school at 12:00 noon on
those days.

Ecology Club
Mrs. Carrier and the Ecology Club, under the design and landscaping
direction of Mr. Kline, landscaped our front entrance with retaining
wall blocks, soil, and new plants. It looks fabulous!! Mr. Kline has an
overall design for our campus and each year the Ecology Club adds a new
section. Thanks also to Mrs. Kline and Mr. Carrier who greatly assisted
as well. Thanks to all who participated and worked in the rain! Thanks
again to Mrs. Carrier who arranged for the load of soil and to Mr. Kline
who picked up the blocks and brought them here.

Another Successful
Field Trip!
Our National Junior Honor
Society and Student Council just returned from an exhilarating field
trip to Washington D. C. and Gettysburg. Our fortunate students were
able to gain a tour of the Pentagon which is the world’s
largest office complex. How exciting is that! They were also able to see
Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the
breathtaking Changing of the Guard, the monuments, the White House, the
Capitol building, and more. At Gettysburg, they were able to learn of
the men from Michigan and their contribution to the preservation of the
Union. They walked on Little Round Top and were exposed to the field
that shook with cannonade and Pickett’s Charge. Our students also
re-enacted a battlefield movement and when their number was yelled out,
they fell to simulate a combat casualty. A very powerful lesson indeed.

Academics
Parents of 7th
grade students…
we will be hosting the 7th grade awards recognition on
Friday, June 6th at 9:00 in the West cafeteria. Students who
have distinguished themselves in the areas of: President’s Award (4.0
GPA) High Honors (3.5 GPA and above), Perfect Citizenship (all 1’s),
Perfect Attendance and Most Improved will be recognized. We will not be
giving an award for students who have made the Honor Roll (3.0 GPA and
above) as they receive quarterly notices and we wish to emphasize this
as a special awards ceremony. Students were told at orientations that
they needed a 3.5 to qualify for an Academic Honor at this ceremony.
Only those students earning awards will be recognized. Parents of
students earning awards are welcome to attend.

Have a Safe & Happy
Summer Vacation
See You in the Fall!

Your child will be cleaning out their locker on
Monday, June 9. After Tuesday, they will not be able to carry
anything at all out of the building with them except purses for
personal items; and purses will be checked. We do this every year so
that items are not thrown out the bus windows and inappropriate ‘last
day’ items (such as shaving cream, silly string etc) are not brought to
school. Any student breaking Code of Conduct rules in school or on the
bus will be suspended into next year no matter what school they attend.
Students that dress inappropriately on the last days of school will
sit in the cafeteria like a detention and miss their exams. Please
make sure your child follows the dress code.
DO NOT bring shaving cream up to school for your child
(yes, parents actually have.)
The police will be patrolling the neighbor-hood and
we have had many elderly people in the neighborhood upset and frightened
by students attacking each other on their property!! Save your
celebrations for home!

Book
Fines

Please take care of any overdue library books or text fines by end
of the year. Your child will not be able to attend the yearbook
signing, end of year field trips and will not receive their report
card until all fines are paid. These fines will also follow them to
8th grade or high school and will exclude them from
activities.
