David Martin has been the Director of Choirs at West Middle School for eleven years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree from Western Michigan University, and a Master of Arts in Music degree in Music Education from Eastern Michigan Universtiy. Mr. Martin's thesis is titled "Recruiting and Retaining Males in the Middle School Vocal Music Program." |

Under Mr. Martin's direction, the West Chorus has performed at the Taylor Rotary's Turn Off The Violence day, in Lansing at a Michigan Education Association conference, in spring and holiday concerts, and at a fundraiser for the Southern Great Lakes Symphony. In 2004, the chorus was split into 3 groups: the Cadet Choir, for first year girls, the Cardinal Singers, for second year girls, and the Men in Black, an all male choir. The choirs at West and student soloists have attained "good" and "excellent" ratings at MSVMA District Choral and Solo and Ensemble Festivals since 1997. In 2004, Mr. Martin was honored by the Taylor School District as their nominee for Wayne County RESA's Teacher of the Year. |

Mr. Martin is a huge fan of Macintosh computers, and has set up a 12-station computer lab in the chorus room running Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory software. He also built his teaching station (in his garage) which houses a Macintosh computer, scanner, Yamaha S90 keyboard, Mark of the Unicorn 828 recording interface, JBL speakers, and Sennheiser microphones. Mr. Martin uses Apple's Garageband software to record the voice and accompaniment parts for the website..
Mr. Martin has directed community and children's theater productions with many downriver theater companies including DYPAC, Showbiz Kidz and Showbiz Starz, Taylor Youth Theater, and Southgate Community Players. Mr. Martin also is the lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and occasional keyboardist and drummer of a rock n' roll band, The Classics (aka The Bel Airs). The 9-piece big band performs rock 'n roll from the 50's to the 90's at church festivals, city arts festivals and performance series, and weddings. He sings in lots of choirs and had a barbershop quartet in college, when he had really long hair! (Yes, he had hair!)
