Your West student is preparing to take the MEAP test soon.  We understand that there are many questions and concerns that you may have regarding this very important test. In an effort to answer these questions, we are providing you with the following Question and Answers:

1. Why does my child have to take the MEAP test?
The Taylor School District is required by the Michigan Department of Education to administer the MEAP test every fall in order to comply with No Child Left Behind requirements

2.  What are the dates for fall 2008 testing?
The testing window is Oct 14-30 for grades 3-9.

3.  Who will be testing my child?
Certified teachers employed with the district (usually their classroom teacher), assisted by certified substitute teachers frequently employed by the district, or formerly certified teachers (retirees). No more than 30 students per proctor.

4.  Which students have to be tested?
ALL students in grades 3-9 must be tested.

5. What if my student is repeating a grade and already took the MEAP test for this grade last year?
They must take the test again.

6. What if my student is certified special education?
They must be tested as well. If their IEP or 504 plan states that they are to use certain accommodations AND those accommodations are being used on a regular basis during class time, then they can use them for the MEAP test.

7. What about MI-ACCESS? Can you use that for special education students?
This test may only be used for students who are severely cognitively impaired. It includes only a tiny fraction of our special education population.

8. What about English Language Learners?
    They must take it too.

9. What about home-schooled students?
If you live in the district and would like to take the MEAP test you must contact the school that your child would be attending if they were enrolled in public school.

10. What if my child is suspended or goes on vacation during the test window?
First, we encourage our parents not to pull their students out for vacation during this time period. However, the testing window is 2 weeks long with days assigned for make-up tests. Hopefully, all students who are on vacation or suspended will be back at some point during those 2 weeks and will be tested.

11.  Is the MEAP test timed?
NO. A student is given as much time as necessary in a single school day to complete a section of the test.

12.  Can they come back on a different day and finish a section they have already started?
NO. It must be finished in one school day.

13.  Can students go to the restroom during the test?
Yes. But we want it to be the exception, not the rule. Only one student at a time may go.

14.  What does my child need to bring on test day?
Nothing. Pencils, calculators and other items necessary for the test will be provided. No cell phones, PDAs, headphones, or any other electronic device is allowed during the test. Nothing is allowed on student desks during the test except necessary testing materials. No food, drink or good luck charms!

15.  What kind of help can the teachers and proctors give during the test?
NONE. Proctors will read the test directions EXACTLY as they appear. They may NOT paraphrase or add their own comments. Proctors can NOT give ANY help of ANY kind. This includes defining or pronouncing a word, spelling a word, etc.

16.  What can I do to help them get ready for the test?
Make sure they get a good night’s sleep before each day of testing. Make sure they have a hearty and healthy breakfast.
