Who doesn't want to have a sense of
community whether it is the neighborhood, an organization, a
place of worship or the place we work? Community is
that sense of belonging that one feels when many hearts and
minds come together to work toward a common goal and live by
a common set of behavioral standards. Our school is
our community! At Myers Elementary School, we
strive to provide consistent parameters and expectations of
conduct to our mini-community: Myersville. As
Myersville citizens, we must know what behaviors to expect
from ourselves and others. The parameters set at
Myersville are the Lifelong Guidelines of:
-
Trustworthiness
-
Truthfulness
-
Active-Listening
-
No Put-downs
-
Personal Best
These are the social outcomes we set for our community.
They also ensure that all students are in an environment
that encourages exploring, discovering and learning.
These behaviors contribute to a sense of workability in
life, not only in Myersville, but also in our students'
future endeavors.
After we establish and focus on the
expectations of the Lifelong Guidelines, we move from group
expectations to the individual meaning of "personal best."
The lifelong Guideline of "personal best" is defined by the
18 Lifeskills:

We work to ensure that all students arrive at a
common understanding of the meaning of each of
the Lifeskills and how to practice them.
In the next paragraphs you will find basic
definitions of each Lifelong Guideline and each
Lifeskill.
We believe that this approach to community
building and self-discipline is one of the
strongest factors in the improvement of this
school.
The famous American scholar, Margaret Mead
said the following, "Never doubt that a small
group of thoughtful, committed people can change
the world. Indeed, it is the only thing
that ever has." We sincerely believe that
the community that begins at Myersville can be
that community!
