Notes from Hoover Middle School’s Media Center The media center welcomes students individually with passes and during passing time. Classes utilize our resources for independent reading and research. Most due dates are the first Wednesday of the month. There is a two-day grace period before a charge of $.05 per school day overdue rate is charged. Students that have an overdue fine or overdue book will not be able to check out another book until their library discrepancy is clear. Report cards are held if a student has an overdue/missing book or owes more than $1.00 in fines when the marking period ends. We appreciate all parental efforts in reminding your child to return their library books. There are 12 computers available to students in the media center. Four are used as an electronic card catalog and 8 are for student, and staff, individual use. Students cannot save on our hard drives to prevent viruses and allowing access to other computer databases. Therefore, we are recommending students sign-up for Zoho, a free online database very similar to Microsoft Office. Students will be able to access their information from the Internet and it remains safe from being deleted and/or lost. They will need an email address to register for this program. The following computer databases/websites are available and bookmarked in the media center: Zoho – www.zoho.comGrolier Encyclopedia – go.grolier.com – available for free home use
World Book Encyclopedia – www.worldbookonline.comCareer Cruising – www.careercruising.com
Occupational Outlook Handbook - www.bls.gov/ocoMichigan Electronic Library – www.mel.orgInspiration Software – used to design graphic organizers A very helpful and comprehensive website for all students is: All My Faves allmyfaves.comThis website has something for everyone from travel, games, homework helpers, etc. Please take the time to check this out with your student and make sure it is bookmarked on your computer. It will certainly be utilized time and again. Please feel free to contact the media center at 313-295-0535 if you have any questions regarding your child and the media center. Encourage them to use our facility in preparation for high school. The more they utilize the materials available to them the more successful they will be in their educational endeavors. Ms. P. Johnson |
