:: Creating a School Lunch

In between finding missing socks and homework, you sometime have to make lunch for your child to tote to school. Mealtime offers these tips to make quick and nutritious school lunches. With these tips, lunch is in the bag.

  • Ask your child - If you expect your child to eat it, talk to them about what they like and dislike to eat. Together, sit down and plan out what their favorite meals are so you have a list to select from when you start packing.

  • Make it fun - For younger children, make lunchtime a fun time. Cut bread into fun shapes using a cookie cutter or use interesting pasta shapes on another day.

  • Pack it full of nutrition- Open a can of fruit, and the possibilities are endless. You just need to open and pack for the child. Or buy pull-top canned fruit for older children to enjoy during lunchtime.

Info You Need to Know

2008-2009 School Year

  • Healthier School Meals
Children all across the country are eating healthier meals since the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans has been implemented in school cafeterias. At Taylor Schools, we have been offering a larger variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, increased servings of grain and bread selections and meals that offer lower fat food choices.  You can be assured that the menus at Taylor schools proudly meet the USDA National School Breakfast and Lunch Program requirements for well-balanced and nutritious meals.

  • Free and Reduced Meal Applications
If your child was eligible for meals last year, your child may participate in breakfast and lunch on a temporary basis while your new application is being processed.  You must reapply and be approved in order to continue to receive breakfast and lunch after September 19, 2008.
For a downloadable .PDF version of the application click HERE.

  • Meal Prepayment Information
Did you know that you can prepay for your child's meals with a check made out to Taylor School District Cafeteria or with cash, either daily, weekly, every other week or monthly.  Payment should be placed in a sealed envelope labeled "Meal Prepayment" with your child's name and dropped off at the school office. The advantages of this are:
    • Minimize the loss of lunch and breakfast money
    • One less thing for you to have to take care of on those busy mornings
    • Assurance that your child's lunch/breakfast money is spent only for that purpose.
    • Faster moving lines

  • Ala Carte:
A full line of ala carte selections (hot/cold sandwiches, salads, entrees, snacks, beverages) will be available every day in the secondary schools.  Prices will be posted in school cafeterias.

  • Menus:
Lunch menus for September will be distributed and posted in each school when the students arrive September 2, 2008 -OR- you may click on the Menu link above to see the Elementary Lunch menu for September.  Remember, all menus may be subject to change and individual schools may change their menu slightly.
