Vocabulary


Adopt:  To take on or assume.

Bark:  The tough outer covering of the stems and roots of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants.

Big:  Large not small.

Bigger:  To become larger.

Branch:  The limb growing from the trunk of a tree.

Bumpy:  Covered with lumps.

Change:  To make or become different.

Different:  Unlike; not the same.

Egg:  A rounded, usually hard-shelled reproductive body from which organisms hatch.

Evergreen:  A tree, shrub or plant having foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year.

Fall:  The time of year between summer and winter when the leaves change color and begin to drop from the trees; autumn.

Flower:  Blossom; the part of the plant with petals; the plant part that produces seeds.

Food:  Anything that organisms eat that provides energy and allows them to grow.

Fruit:  The structure of a plant in which seeds are found.

Growth ring:  An annual formation of wood in plants as they grow.

Height:  How tall something is.

Leaf:  The flat, green part of the plant that grows on the stem or up from the roots.

Leaves:  The flat, green parts of a plant that grow on the stem or up from the roots.

Line:  A thin, straight mark.

Little:  Very small.

Living:  Alive; having life; not dead.

Matching:  Sharing the same properties; similar.

Measurement:  The total length, width, height, volume or weight of an object.

Missing:  To be lost or absent.

Needle:  A narrow stiff leaf, as those of conifers.

Nut:  A hard-shelled, one-seeded fruit, such as an acorn or hazelnut.

Oval:  Resembling an egg shape; elliptical.

Paddle:  A usually wooden object with flat blade at one end or sometimes at both ends, used to propel a canoe or small boat.

Pattern:  A design: something used as a model for making things.

Point:  Where two lines come together to form a sharp end.

Root:  The part of a plant that grows downward and provides support and uptake of water and nutrients.

Round:  Circular in shape.

Rough:  Bumpy; not smooth.

Rubbing:  A representation of a raised or indented surface made by placing paper over the surface and rubbing the paper gently with a marking agent such as charcoal or chalk.

Same:  Alike; not different.

Season:  One of the four natural divisions of the year; spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Seed:  The small part of a plant found in a flower or fruit from which new plants can grow.

Shape:  The appearance or form of an object.

Shell:  A hard, outer covering.

Size:  How big or small something is.

Skinnier:  To become thinner, smaller; not fatter.

Smaller:  Not as large; littler.

Smooth:  Flat, level: not rough.

Spring:  The season of the year, occurring between winter and summer, during which the weather becomes warmer and plants revive.

Tip:  The uppermost point; the top.

Tree:  A plant with a single, main stem or trunk that is made of slid, woody tissue.

Triangle:  A three-sided shape.

Trunk:  The main stem of a tree from which branches grow.

Twig:  A small, leafless branch of a woody plant.

Winter:  The coldest season of the year, occurring between autumn and spring.

Fabric can be described in many different ways (e.g. rough, smooth, transparent.)
There is a certain way that fabric is put together and a certain way it comes apart.
Water, dirt, soap, stain and other materials can cause changes in fabric.
Fabric has many different uses.

Vocabulary
 

Bead:  A small rounded object with a hole through which thread can be passed; a piece of jewelry.

Burlap:  A strong, coarsely woven cloth made of fibers of jute, flax, or hemp.

Cardboard:  A kind of stiff, thick paper.

Clean:  Washed or polished; not dirty.

Cloth:  Fabric or material formed by weaving or knitting.

Collage:  An artistic composition of different materials or object.

Corduroy:  A durable fabric, usually made of cotton, with vertical ribs.

Denim:  A coarse twilled cloth, usually cotton, used for jeans, overalls, and work uniforms.

Detergent:  The soap used to clean clothes.

Dirty:  Not clean; soiled.

Dropper:  A device used to measure out drops of liquid.

Dye:  The substance used to color materials.

Fabric:  A cloth produced by knitting or weaving.

Fleece:  The coat of wool of a sheep or other similar animal.

Fringe:  A decorative border or edging of hanging threads, cords, or strips.

Knit:  To make a fabric or garment by intertwining yarn or thread in a series or connected loops either by hand, with knitting needles, or on a machine.

Laundry:  The process of washing clothes.

Least:  The smallest amount.

Most:  The largest amount.

Needle:  Small, slender implement used for sewing.

Pattern:  A design; something used as a model for making things.

Permanent:  Long-lasting.

Plaid:  A pattern of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines of various widths and colors.

Property:  A characteristic of an object that helps us identify it, such as size, color, shape, or texture.

Rough:  Bumpy: not smooth.

Satin:  A smooth fabric, made of silk or rayon, woven with a glossy face and a dull back.

Scratchy:  Rough in texture.

Scrub brush:  A brush used for washing.

See-through:  Transparent; clear.

Sew:  To make, repair, or fasten by stitching, as with needle and thread or a sewing machine.

Shape:  The appearance or form of an object.

Shiny:  Bright or polished.

Slippery:  Very smooth or slick.

Smooth:  Flat, level; not rough.

Soak:  To place in a liquid; to get wet.

Soap:  A material used to clean objects.

Soft:  Not hard or rough.

Spread:  To flatten out or cover a surface.

Stain:  To change the color of.

Stripe:  A line of a different shade or color.

Sturdy:  Durable; heavyweight.

Thick:  To have a greater distance from one side to another; not thin.

Thin:  To have a smaller distance from one side to another; not thick.

Thread:  Fine cord of a fibrous material, such as cotton, used in needlework and weaving.

Waterproof:  Unaffected by water; inability to become wet.

Yarn:  A strand of twisted threads of natural or synthetic material, such as wool or nylon, used in weaving or knitting.
